A perfect match on Design for Me… for a Shoreditch basement extension

Peter posted his project to Design for Me in November 2015, looking for a talented architect for a basement extension to his Georgian townhouse in the heart of Shoreditch, London N1. He registered his project with just a few key details and we instantly matched him up with some fantastic residential architects.

Peter’s project description

Rear basement garden extension

We wish to enlarge our Georgian house by building a rear basement extension into our garden using the GPDO permitted development regulation. We would like to commence work on site in April/May next year.”

Through Design for Me, Peter narrowed down his search by speaking to three firms and gave us his feedback after meeting them for consultations at the property:

We have found an architect who we think will design a first class extension for us. Paul has a young, enthusiastic, capable team of four architects with recent experience in designing extensions for Georgian/Victorian properties.

Paul and his team (left), based in Lambeth, South London, were appointed and started work on the concept design.

The design

Paul and his team found out that the street in Shoreditch is listed due to connections with the “Haberdasher’s Company”, and the house would have been previously occupied by dressmakers. They drew upon this interesting heritage to develop the concept:

In extending the dark back kitchen, we looked to this heritage and, inspired by the cut-out-and-use approach of dressmaking and tailoring, we imagined a pattern being cut into the garden and lifted, leaving a void. The final space is reminiscent of a clean-cut white shirt – classic and modern.

From above, the greenery of the roof feels lifted from the remaining garden, and the kitchen units and seating are the remnants of the cut earth. A simple idea, with a modern finish. The history becomes narrative rather than pastiche.
