Ben founded his practice in 2009 and has since designed a number of widely published and award winning sustainable homes. His private residential projects include house extensions, basements and loft conversions at all scales. A rational and pragmatic approach to each commission is combined with a desire to delight, forming spaces and places that bring joy. He has extensive experience with heritage properties, where there is often a need to balance sensitive refurbishment with carefully considered contemporary extensions. Projects are designed holistically with architecture, landscape, joinery and interiors each interlocking to form a coherent whole.
He takes pride in a tailored and personal approach. Listening to clients, seeking elegant answers to their questions and adding unexpected value through creative design. The success of each project is driven by a precise management of budget, programme and quality, resulting in a smooth and reliable process from initial concept to completion.
His residential projects are widely recognised, with recent shortlistings in the AJ Small Projects, AJ Retrofit and NLA Don’t Move Improve awards. His work often features in design publications such as Dezeen and Grand Designs Magazine. He is a PHI Certified Passivhaus Designer with significant technical expertise in the design of low energy buildings. He has previously worked at a range of prestigious firms, including Grimshaw Architects and Richard Rogers Partnership.

It has now been a little over a year since we moved back into our home and we are simply thrilled with the outcome. AFL fully delivered on the brief and our home feels fully modern while still being totally in keeping with the period of the original building and the surrounding area. While we have no intention of undertaking another project in the near future, we would not hesitate to work with AFL again, and have already recommended them to a work colleague who has also chosen to mandate them.
