Cheryl from Milton Keynes posted her project to Design for Me looking for a garden designer to design a low maintenance garden. Situated in a new build development, this garden started out as a muddy yard following the construction of a new extension to the downstairs kitchen.
After registering her project with just a few key details, we matched Cheryl with the best candidates and she received interest from a number of garden designers.
Cheryl’s project description
Our rear extension is complete and now the garden needs to be designed. We already have a jacuzzi at the end of the garden with decking in place. Large sliding doors look out into the garden. We’d like a lush, low maintenance garden with planting raised up from the ground for easier maintenance and also protection from our scottie dog. We’d also like something done to the boundary walls to make the space feel more welcoming.
Budget: £10,000 – £15,000
Through Design for Me, Cheryl narrowed down her search and ultimately found the perfect fit for her project in garden designer, Dave:
Dave is a gold medal winning garden and landscape designer operating nationally with bases in London and the Midlands. After working for the Royal Horticultural Society for over ten years, Dave founded his practice in 2017. Dave has worked at Birmingham Botanical Gardens, RHS Garden Wisley and at several of the RHS Flower Shows. He recently won a gold medal, best in category and best construction awards for a garden he designed for the 2019 RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. Dave enjoys working to create engaging, enjoyable and practical spaces for any size of garden or landscape.
The result
Dave on the design:
Bespoke raised planting beds were created from round sleepers set at variable heights. These were then planted with a scheme that centred around a white colour palette, with lasting interest throughout the year.
Slatted cedar panels and bespoke trellis work was added to disguise a neighbour’s garage wall and further slatted cedar panels were custom made to fit around a sunny decked area featuring a jacuzzi spa.

Cheryl: Working with Dave has been an absolute pleasure on this project. He took the time to really understand our brief and took into consideration all of the key points that were important to us. Dave is meticulous in his designs and has such a keen eye for detail.
He was extremely patient with me as he painstakingly went through all of the planting plans with me – numerous times – and never once complained!
He is an absolute perfectionist which is evident in his work.
I absolutely love our garden, which has now become our favourite ‘room in the house’.
