Getting the most out of Design for Me

Design For Me is here to help you find a great designer who is the right fit for your residential project. To give you the best chance of finding them, simply ask yourself these 5 questions:

1. Have you given all the details you can?

You don’t need to know exactly what you want to do before approaching a designer. They will work with you to develop your brief and reveal the opportunities in your home. But have you included all the information that you do know? Consider editing your project and including these points:

• Say what stage your project is at. Has any work been done already? Perhaps you haven’t even purchased the property or land yet? Even at this early stage, you may benefit from some professional advice to see the opportunities or constraints. You could even hire an architect to visit the property/plot with you.

• Be clear about your project budget. This helps the designers understand the size of your project to see if they would be suitable for you.

• Add images!

• What would you like your designer to do? Do you just need some rough concept drawings? a planning application? Or do you need help from start to finish – including finding a builder and overseeing their work? Architects are trained to oversee projects from the planning to the construction and would be happy to help.

2. Are they a good match?

We give all of the designers on the a % match score unique to your project. We recommend that you shortlist designers with a high match score. We’ve found that most homeowners end up appointing a designer with a match score over 70%. This score is generated based on the project details and preferences you have provided. However, it’s also important to make your own personal judgements based on images of their past work, their description and testimonials.

3. Attract interest in your project

It’s important that designers reciprocate interest in your project. In fact, you can only invite interested designers for a consultation. To attract as much interest in your project as possible you can shortlist as many designers as you like by clicking on search designers. Every designer you shortlist will receive an email stating that a homeowner is interested in themThis encourages them to look at your project and show interest back!

Don’t hesitate in making your profile stand out. Add pictures – the more the better! Even smaller projects with modest budgets can be very attractive to designers if they open the door to creativity.

4. Do you get on?

Once you have attracted some interest, go to your shortlist section and invite up to three designers for a consultation. This in an opportunity to see how you get on and understand how they approach a project like yours. Before inviting them to see your property, you may want to have a phone conversation first. If you think they could be suitable, you can ask for a fee quotation.

It’s important that you and your designer see eye to eye. The better you understand and trust each other the more likely you are to feel satisfied at the end of it. This is why we recommend meeting 2-3 interested designers. Your project is unique and so are designers, so it’s important that they are the right fit.
